Tonight I couldn’t resist one of my favorite wines on sale at TJ’s. It was Viognier from Mbali winery in South Africa. I don’t often see Viognier from South Africa usually it is from France or if it is from California it’s Chenin Blanc.
French and California Viognier is usually very floral on the nose and has a light soft finish with light oily texture. This particular Viognier hits home on most points with light stone fruit leaving a clean refreshing finish. The only area that it is outshined by it’s Cali and French counterparts is in the bouquet. French Viognier usually has a very pronounced floral scent. However, this South African brand has floral notes but not nearly the intensity of what I was expecting or hoping. It is an enjoyable wine just the same. This wine would be perfect on a warm summer afternoon with figs, dates and mild cheeses.
